Bei der Psoriasis sind Veranderungen im Dehydroepiandrosteron-(DHEA-) Stoffwechsel nachweisbar, die als genetisch fixierte Basisstorungen unter bestimmten Bedingungen die Grundlage fur die Auspragung der manifesten Psoriasis darstellen konnen. Sie sind gekennzeichnet durch eine verminderte Penetration von DHEA durch die Zellmembran sowie eine verstarkte Reduktion von DHEA zu Androstendiol (ADIOL) und damit einem erhohten Quotienten DHEA/ADIOL.
Increased blood mercury levels in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that leads to dementia and death. In addition to several genetic parameters, various environmental factors may influence the risk of getting AD. In order to test whether blood levels of the heavy metal mercury are increased in AD, we measured blood mercury concentrations in AD patients (n = 33), and compared them to age-matched control patients with major depression (MD) (n = 45), as well as to an additional control group of patients with various non-psychiatric disorders (n = 65). Importance The effects of recruitment maneuvers and positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration on clinical outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remain uncertain. Objective To determine if lung recruitment associated with PEEP titration according to the best respiratory-system compliance decreases 28-day mortality of patients with moderate to severe ARDS compared with a conventional low-PEEP strategy.
