The analysis of the diet composition of the barn owl Tyto alba (Scopoli, 1769) from the region of Brzeg, Opolskie Voivodeship (Poland)

Research on the diet composition of the barn owl Tyto alba was conducted near the town of Przecza in the area of Lewin Brzeski (Opolskie Voivodeship. On the basis of 1158 bone elements, 14 species of small mammals were found, including 4 insectivorous species (Sorex araneus, Sorex minutus, Neomys fodiens, Cocidura suaveolens), 5 vole species (Microtus arvalis, Microtus agrestis, Arvicola terrestris, Myodes glareolus, Microtus oeconomus) and 5 mouse species (Mus musculus, Apodemus agrarius, Apodemus flavicolis, Apodemus sylvaticus, Micromys minutus). On the origin of mongrels: evolutionary history of free-breeding dogs in Eurasia

Although a large part of the global domestic dog population is free-ranging and free-breeding, knowledge of genetic diversity in these free-breeding dogs (FBDs) and their ancestry relations to pure-breed dogs is limited, and the indigenous status of FBDs in Asia is still uncertain. We analyse genome-wide SNP variability of FBDs across Eurasia, and show that they display weak genetic structure and are genetically distinct from pure-breed dogs rather than constituting an admixture of breeds. Our results suggest that modern European breeds originated locally from European FBDs. East Asian and Arctic breeds show closest affinity to East Asian FBDs, and they both represent the earliest branching…

Lead in the Bones of Cows from a Medieval Pb-Ag Metallurgical Settlement: Bone Mineralization by Metalliferous Minerals

Pb contents (13-53 mg kg−1) and pathological changes in almost complete cow skeletonsdiscovered in graves adjacent to Pb and Ag smelting furnaces active in the Silesian-Cracovian region, in the mid-12th century are reported in the article. In addition to Pb,elements such as Zn, Cd, Fe, Mn, Cd, and Ba characteristic of Zn-Pb-Ag ores in the regionwere identified. Bone fragments and the soil in which they had lain for almost 800 yearswere examined by SEM, EDS. XRD was used to identify minerals present in soils. Zróżnicowanie uzębienia u nornika zwyczajnego Microtus arvalis Pallas, 1778 z okolic Częstochowy (Wyżyna Śląska)

An analysis of the diversity in the dentition of the common vole, Microtus arvalis, from three localities near Częstochowa (Panki, Przystajń and Mstów) is provided. Populations from these areas were compared to each other in these terms. The teeth were analyzed – the first lower molar (M1) and the upper third molar of the maxilla (M3). Four basic forms of Simplex, Typica, Duplicata and Variabilis were used to study the diversity of the upper tooth. We developed our own model for studying the differentiation of the lower tooth. The present research and a comparison with literature data confirm that the subspecies M. a. duplicatus does occur in the study area.

Pipistrellus kuhlii (Kuhl, 1817) (Mammalia: Chiroptera): a species new to the fauna of Tajikistan

Pipistrellus kuhlii (Kuhl, 1817) (Mammalia: Chiroptera): a species new to the fauna of Tajikistan. In the paper, the first record of Pipistrellus kuhlii (Kuhl, 1817) in Tajikistan is described. The site is located approximately 500 km from the northern sites of this species in Afghanistan. The discussed issues are connected with the possible isolation of the Central-Eastern Asian populations of this species. The article includes a discussion on assigning the population of P. kuhlii from Eastern Europe to a subspecies and suggests the need for further research that would allow for a clear taxonomic assignment of the analysed population.
