Embedded Knowledge-based Speech Detectors for Real-Time Recognition Tasks
Speech recognition has become common in many application domains, from dictation systems for professional practices to vocal user interfaces for people with disabilities or hands-free system control. However, so far the performance of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are comparable to human speech recognition (HSR) only under very strict working conditions, and in general much lower. Incorporating acoustic-phonetic knowledge into ASR design has been proven a viable approach to raise ASR accuracy. Manner of articulation attributes such as vowel, stop, fricative, approximant, nasal, and silence are examples of such knowledge. Neural networks have already been used successfully as de…
Efficient MLP Digital Implementation on FPGA
The efficiency and the accuracy of a digital feed-forward neural networks must be optimized to obtain both high classification rate and minimum area on chip. In this paper an efficient MLP digital implementation. The key features of the hardware implementation are the virtual neuron based architecture and the use of the sinusoidal activation function for the hidden layer. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions has been evaluated developing different FPGA based neural prototypes for the High Energy Physics domain and the automatic Road Sign Recognition domain. The use of the sinusoidal activation function decreases hardware resource employment of about 32% when compared with the standar…

Asymptomatic ventricular pre-excitation in children.
ASYMPTOMATIC VENTRICULAR PREEXCITATION IN CHILDREN OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study was planned for a good risk assessment of asymptomatic patients affected by ventricular pre-excitation. METHODS: From 1985 to 2007, 124 patients with an atrioventricular pathway (electrocardiographic signs of ventricular pre-excitation) were admitted to our cardiology division. The average age was 7 years (range 1 month to 18 years). The mean follow-up period in the whole population of patients was 4.2 years (range 1-13 years). Four patients were lost during the follow-up. During this period, all patients remained in good health. In all of them, we performed a Holter evaluation every year. An intermittent…

Approccio diagnostico non invasivo con tomografia computerizzata multidetettore a 40 strati per lo studio della malattia aterosclerotica coronarica
Background. Multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography (MDCT-CA) is a non-invasive technique that clearly shows coronary anatomy and correctly identifies plaque location and morphology. In this study we assessed diagnostic accuracy of MDCT-CA in detectiong significant stenosis in patients with clinically relevant coronary tree disease. Methods. Fifty patients (38 males, 12 females, mean age 60.9 ± 9.2 years) with atypical chest pain, stable or unstable angina pectoris, or non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction underwent MDCT-CA (Brilliance 40, Philips Medical Systems, Cleveland, OH, USA) within 3 days before diagnostic conventional coronary angiography. Inclusion criteria were s…

Active-fixation coronary sinus pacing lead extraction: A hybrid approach
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) can be considered as the standard treatment for patients suffering from heart failure (NYHA III–IV), severely reduced left ventricular (LV) function, and wide QRS complexes. Over the past years, the lead systems used to stimulate the left ventricle have evolved technically from epicardial approaches to a transvenous access accompanied by a significant reduction of procedure-related complication rates [1]. However, even today, LV dislodgement rates ranging 5–10% and the instability of thresholds over time remain the greatest challenges with transvenous LV leads in CRT. Therefore, a special LV lead utilizing active fixation (the Attain StarFix® active f…
