ON NEW ROLES IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS: E-DOCTORS AND E-PATIENTS
2014
Medical communication can be both a dialogue between expert-to-expert or expert-to-laymen (Cordella, 2004; Bowles, 2006; Candlin, 2006; Maynard and Hudak 2008; Lutfey and Maynard 1998; Heritage 2010; Heritage and Clayman, 2010 among others). In this last exchange, the doctor treats the patient as an ‘understanding recipient of medical reasoning’ (Peräkylä 1997) and language is simplified for communicative reasons (Koch-Weser et al., 2009). Patients are assumed as having little medical knowledge, which affects their understanding of medical terms and eventually leads to poor communication and to patients’ dissatisfaction (Candlin, Bruton and Leather, 1974; Coulthard and Ashby, 1975; Todd and…
Prefaces in medical dictionaries: from moves to rhetorical analysis
2017
Medical dictionaries represent, among the other things, an important pedagogic genre (Swales 1995, Bhatia, 1997, Hyland 2000) within academic education, since they are the means through which professional writers talk about their disciplines and address to scholars. This paper describes the macro structure of preface sections in fourteen English dictionaries related to the field of medicine and investigates on the rhetorical and discursive devices employed in these texts to establish the importance of the author's work. In addition, the paper questions…

However, in particular situation such as doctor-patient interviews, computer mediated communication is still a limit. This paper is based on two lines of research in language studies, namely the studies of language corpus and studies of communication in health encounters. The corpus is formed by the medical entries that appeared in biomedical/health service sites. The samples collected were analysed in order to find discourse pattern…
Asking for medical help by posting on the net: genre, functions and ethical issues
2014
On the basis of the growing of the number of sites related to health issues and online conversation, statistical research tend to acknowledge that the communication practices of health message boards have significant roles to play in the era of online counseling (Anderson, 2003; Kim & Yoon, 2011; Mulholland, 1999; Eysenbach and Diepgen 1999; O'Connor and Johanson 2000; Shuyler and Knight 2003; Gooden and Winefield 2007). However, one of the main worries concerning these spaces has been the uncontrolled information that is provided by users with no defined roles and who do not/cannot take responsibility for what they say. Previous studies were intended to explore how people discussing health…
