Neuroscience and Disorders of the Nervous System

description

During the last decades, research in the field of Neuroscience has made amazing discoveries that have transformed our understanding and improved our comprehension of brain function. This has contributed to the development of new treatments and therapies for various neurological disorders and mental illnesses. The convergence of different disciplines has allowed addressing fundamental issues for the knowledge of human behavior, thought, and emotion. LabNSC group is within this area, Neuroscience, undoubtedly one of the most exciting areas of research in Health Sciences. The Laboratory of Social Cognitive Neuroscience (LabNSC) at the University of Valencia is part of the Department of Psychobiology of the Faculty of Psychology and the IDOCAL Research Institute. Since its inception, it has developed research focused on the study of the biological bases of the response to social interactions, especially stressful situations. Specifically, we are interested in the psychobiological mechanisms that intervene when we are faced with a stressful situation and their effects on cognitive and affective levels. The research carried out in the laboratory adopts an integrative approach based on the convergence of multiple study methodologies that allow advancing in the understanding of the effects of stress on the brain and, as a consequence, on psychological processes and behavior. In their human studies, we use extensive neuropsychological evaluations, electroencephalographic recordings, and neuroendocrine response analyses, with our target population being both young and older people of both sexes. Additionally, LabNSC studies the effect of stressful situations and the activity of the Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis on healthy populations and those with diseases associated with aging (Mild Cognitive Impairment, Type II Diabetes, etc.).
