description

The scope of MEYES is women entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship. In the 1980s, the first studies on women entrepreneurs emerged, highlighting the differences between female and male entrepreneurs: business characteristics, motivations for engaging in entrepreneurial activities, assessment of the main obstacles in starting and developing a business, personal traits, management styles, or chosen industry sectors. These differences justify studying women entrepreneurs independently from conventional or standard business theory, which compares female entrepreneurs to their male counterparts. In this sense, the use of male values, ways of thinking, and acting in the analysis of female entrepreneurs has been criticized. Among the most controversial topics referred to in recent years are: (i) the motivations of women entrepreneurs, (ii) entrepreneurship as a factor for social change, and (iii) differences between male and female entrepreneurs. Studies on social entrepreneurship in developed and developing economies suggest that social entrepreneurship is a key aspect for creating and diversifying entrepreneurial activity, economic growth, women's emancipation, and empowerment.
