The process of transferring the selected elements of traditional culture from the current (the so-called “authentic”) cultural context to a new stage-like or festivities-like space is referred to as the folklorism which finds its own place in the dimension of the contemporary popular culture. Those phenomena are wrongly perceived as an extension of folk traditions, which results in stereotypical ideas about cultural heritage. Folklorism is not an extension of the so-called “traditional folklore”, but rather a qualitatively new phenomenon that is internally diverse and subject to change. On the one hand, it determines the direction of cultural policy, subordinated to the promotion of a region or a country (“propaganda-mercantile folklorism”), and, on the other, it inspires the activity of local communities and sets a profile of an individual’s participation in the culture. The author interprets these phenomena on the basis of the Polish folklorism in the Silesia region where, after political transformations in Poland and official registration of the German minority, there have been important changes in the development of folklorism-based extravaganza. Reinterpretation of the cultural heritage, rapid ritualisation of the new “invented” traditions additionally enriches the cultural dimension of the ethnic and regional identity as well as is an important factor in contemporary celebrations (festivities, festivals, etc.). The contemporary folklorism also inspires cultural (e.g. folk story-telling competitions) and educational (conducting interviews) activities.
