description

Roman Catholic-Orthodox dialogue, due to the doctrinal similitude of both ecclesial traditions, raises the greatest hopes as to unification in faith and in church teachings. Over nearly four hundred years of work by the Joint Commission for the theological dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church on the global scene, it has born much good fruit. For the dialogue to be initiated, the Churches had to pass through enormous transformation, both mental and spiritual. The point was for them to rediscover each other as sisterly Churches. Establishing Joint Commission for the theological dialogue between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church (November 30,1979) by John Paul II and Patriarch Dimitrios I, ought to be considered as a real breakthrough in formation of new Catholic-Orthodox ecclesial references. The work of the Commission was officially launched on May 29,1980 on Patmos island, whereas the Commission meetings were inaugurated the day after on Rhodes. The fruit of the dialogue are some significant documents: The Mystery of the Church and of the Eucharist in the Light of the Mystery of the Holy (Munich, 1982), Faith, Sacraments and the Unity of the Church (Bari 1987), The Sacrament of Order in the Sacramental Structure of the Church (Uusi Valamo, 1988), A Document on Uniatism and Proselytism (Freising, 1990), Uniatism, method of union of the past, and the present search for fuli communion (Ariccia, 1991), Uniatism, method of union of the past, and the present search for fuli communion (Balamand, 1993), The Ecclesiological and Canonical. Conseąuences of the Sacramental Naturę of the Church. Communion, Conciliarity and Authority (Rawenna, 2007), Synodality and Primacy During the First Millennium: Towards a Common Understanding in Service to the Unity of the Church (Chieti 2016). Thanks to the Roman Catholic-Orthodox dialogue, certain barriers, prejudices and stereotypes concerning mutual perception and evaluation, has been dismantled. Some major steps have been taken with regard to theological agreements. A new hope for bringing even more dynamie into this process has been raised by the meeting of Pope Francis with the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus’ Kirill (February 12, 2016) and the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church (june 19-26, 2016), held on Crete.
