The aim of the article is to present the image of local government in the his-tory of Poland in the 20th century, in terms of the latest school history textbooks. For the purpose of the analysis, eight studies have been selected, which since September 2012 have been taught in Polish secondary schools. The image of the title issue emerging from the analysis indicates that the marginal treatment of the role and signifi cance of local government in relation to the period of the Second Republic of Poland is clearly visible. More information on self-government can be found in the handbooks that refer to the period of the People’s Republic of Poland and the most recent history of Poland, i.e. the events that took place after 1989. Here, in reference to such ground-breaking events for local government in the history of Poland as those of 1975, 1990 or 1999, the authors of most of the analysed studies did not limit themselves to providing only the most im-portant factual and statistical information, but, what is particularly important, they also made an attempt to present their genesis and describe the eff ects of introduction and author’s assessment. However, this does not change the fact that the analysed issue is clearly “in the shadow of great political events” on the pages of school history textbooks. On one hand, this should be regarded as an ordinary situation which concerns not only historical education in our country but is a broader, even global trend. On the other hand, however, we should constantly strive for an educational situation in which as often as possible, in particular through historical examples, we show young people the role and importance of local government as a causal factor at the local level of government that is closest to their hearts.
