description

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disease that leads to significant disability and can affect health related quality of life. Social support may be one of the predictors of quality of life in MS. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between disability associated with the course of multiple sclerosis, social support and quality of life. 137 people diagnosed with MS participated in the study. Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Guy's Neurological Disability Scale (GNDS), Berlin Social Support Scales and the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale 29 (MSIS-29) were used in the study. The study showed no significant relationship between disability and perceived social support. However, a significant relationship between neurological disability and the need for support was demonstrated. The need for support was also a mediator of the relationship between neurological disability and the health related quality of life in the psychical sphere. It means that multiple sclerosis through its symptoms affects the need for support, which in turn affects the quality of life
