Masteroppgave bygg BYG500 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 Standardization is currently not being utilized much in the Norwegian road building industry compared to the rest of the construction industry and road construction abroad. To harvest the potential benefits, it is interesting to determine how to increase the use of standardization in road building. The aim of this master’s thesis is to determine how to make use of standardized concrete bridges for the construction of new national highways. To investigate this, the thesis has established knowledge on today’s situation and found dominant obstacles towards a more widespread use of standardized bridge solutions. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration’s database for bridges, BRUTUS, has been used to map the situation on national highways in Norway. Stakeholders within the construction industry involved in road- and bridge projects were interviewed to gain knowledge of obstacles towards further standardization. The thesis also investigated the magnitude of local effects on a representative, standardized bridge, considering wind loads and seismic loads. Further, restrictions on bridge geometry presented by road geometry and design codes were investigated. The results of the investigation show that many highway bridges are limited to a small number of typical lengths, indicating a potential for standardization. Prefabricated, single-span bridges with short span lengths showed the greatest potential.
