The chapter discusses the main concepts related to addiction and its diagnosis. The definition of addiction and diagnostic criteria for substance and behavior addiction will be discussed. Formal criteria enabling professional treatment and social understanding of the phenomenon are important for systematising knowledge and clearly presenting the profiles of addicts. The text describes separately the problem of addictions to behavior, listing those most common in the literature. In addition, a discussion is initiated on behaviors that formally do not meet the definition of addiction, although they are associated with some compulsion. In addition, the issues of the experience of the disease and treatment of addicts and their family members are discussed. This text is extended to include clinical experiences of therapeutic work with people coping with addiction and their family members.
