As part of an approach focusing on the phases of anthropisation of the Vosges mountains, which has already begun on the Alsatian slope and the Haut-Vosges, this project, which combines archaeo-geography and geoarchaeology, aims to measure, over the long time, the dynamics of a medium-altitude forest area, located on the Lorraine slope, a priori impacted by Man. The choice of the Fossard Massif as the object of study, which extends over a hundred km² to the north of Remiremont (Vosges), is the result of its close topographical and historical link with this town, born of an abbey originally founded, in the 7th century, in a late-antique castrum, situated at an altitude of 670 m at the southern end of this relief and today known as "Le Saint-Mont" (Saint-Amé, Vosges).
