Maurice Carrez, Public Opinion in the region of Sancey and Belvoir (the Doubs department) during the French Revolution : an interpretive essay. As in a few other places in the France of 1793, several small-scaled Vendees took place in the villages of the former barony of Belvoir, which included the canton of Sancey in the Doubs department in 1790. Avoiding classifications that tend to simplify the actual situations, the author demonstrates that the counter-revolutionary behavior covered a number of intense local conflicts beginning as early as 1789 during the movement against feudal lordships and which became struggles of rivalry between the catholics and the patriots from 1791 on. However, within each side there were variations. After the repression of the counter-revolutionary movement in 1793, the patriots succeeded in imposing their domination for a time, and then the conservatives established their lasting victory. The author studies the respective influence of socio-economic determination and of ideological and cultural (even anthropological) elements, such as family structure, all of which led to the long-term conservatism in this specific microcosm.
