For more than two decades, the health of populations has been at the heart of developmental issues. Population health issues fall within the "health, population and development" paradigm. It is in this spirit that experts demonstrated at the 1994 Cairo Conference on Population and Development that HIV/AIDS affects both population growth and sustainable development. Likewise, HIV infection is a source of discrimination, social inequalities, and the weakening of couples and families to the point where some individuals are even ostracized because of their HIV-positive status. In these conditions, how do people of different serological status live their married lives and their procreation despite the high risk of infection ? What are the socio-cultural determinants of serodiscordance in Congo ? It is to provide answers to these questions that this study, which focuses on discordant couples in the Congo, was conducted. We used data from ESISC-1 to constitute our sample composed of 2.266 couples for the quantitative approach and 30 interviews carried out in the context of the complementary survey (qualitative approach). The main results made it possible to define three profiles of serodiscordant couples: (i) the first group includes couples living in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, characterized by a high standard of living, educated, having between 0 and 2 children; (ii) the second, intermediate group is made up of couples who live in secondary urban centers (principal towns of departments and districts) and having an average standard of living; (iii) finally, the third group is composed of couples living in rural areas, elderly, with a low standard of living, uneducated and with at least 6 children. We note that the number of partners, the region of residence, the number of children, the duration of the union, the ages of the partners, their level of education, their ethnicity, the fact of practicing protected sexual relations, the religion practiced, the standard of living and knowledge of the transmission mechanisms of HIV / AIDS, love for the partner and knowledge of the serology of the infected partner are explanatory factors in the serodiscordance of HIV/AIDS in Congo-Brazzaville.
