Intellectuals and the end of revolution: the functionalist view
Juan Pecourtsubject
InstitutionalisationSociologyHumanitiesdescription
This article's main aim is to present a basic picture of the central functionalist theories on intellectuals developed in the United States during the sixties and seventies. Today, it seems that the main debates arising during that period were placed in Europe (Sartre, Aron, Foucault) and they tended to be linked to Marxism. However, American theorists focused on the specialization and institutionalization of the intellectual and, in this sense, presented a model of this social actor resemblant, in some cases, with the present figures of the intellectual.
