It discusses the debates between Zapffe and Næss in the 1940s, Haakonsen and Bull in the 1950s, Aarseth and Elster in the 1980s, and Kittang og Bjerck Hagen in the 2000s. The article focuses on how each of these researchers defines “vitenskap” (research/science) and argues for a scientific standard in the interpretation of literary works.
