The essay reconstructs the history of the castle of Pietraperzia -now reduced to a state of ruin - between the second half of fifteenth and the first half of the sixteenth centuries. Over that period it was tranformed from a medieval fortress to a luxurious residence, home to a cultured and sophisticated court. Supported by new archival documents, the author highlights the role of the aristocratic patrons, the Barresi of Pietraperzia and, in particular, that of two key figures, Giovanni Antonio II and his son, Matteo. Simultaneously the author offers a hypotetical reconstruction of the 16 century appearance and configuration of the building. This was the most significant and lasting epoch in the life of the now irremediably lost structure.
