description

The snake list drawn up by Lucanus in ninth book of Pharsalia (vv. 700-733) shows a complex rewriting work not only of many passages from Nicandrus’ Theriakà, read through the ancient scholiastic, but also of a wide epic-didascalic tradition, which has Vergil, the author of Culex and Petronius’ Ilioupersis as main exponents. The passage consists of a series of internal to Lucanus’ ninth book crossreferences and announces the remaining description of the Libian military ventures, in a country wasted by drought and dangerous reptiles.
