description

On 13 November 1987, Horst Bienek wrote an open letter to the secretary-general of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. The German writer demanded that he should be rehabilitated by the Soviet leader. This started a public debate, in which Boris Chasanov wrote a polemical letter, chastising Bienek. My paper focuses on the argument between Bienek and Chasanov in the sphere of literary studies (Pierre Bourdieu), and my goal is to examine theories of authorship implicated by the controversy between the two writers.
