This article focuses on art-based inquiry as an approach to creating artistic performances based on narratives related to historical events. The performance referred to is The Flight from Trakehnen, a multimedia presentation using dance, music, audio, texts, images, video clips, stage lightning, and equestrian sport. It was created in a university and upper secondary school context in collaboration with a local equestrian sport establishment. The performance was re-presented as a chamber music concept in a recital hall. The Flight from Trakehnen unfolds against a backdrop of dramatic events during the very last months of the Second World War and highlights the human values of courage and hope. The article draws attention to how aesthetic expressions can be applied, not only to retell stories, but to explore the stories so that narratives can be developed into artistic performances that provide meaning for both participants and audiences. Even if the discussion takes its point of departure in the creative processes behind The Flight from Trakehnen, the methodological approach and the principles behind the practical implementation can be applied to any artistic performance project in action.
