Emile Zola was known for his affection towards all species of animals. They were present in great quantity in his everyday life in his cottage in Médan, where he kept dogs, cats, cattle and fowl, as well as in his works where they were given a special place. Among all the animals, cats were particularly cherished by the writer. Ilie paper analyzes a few portraits of Zola’s feline protagonists as shown in a short story, The Cats’ Paradise, and in two novels: Zola’s first significant work, Therese Raquin, and The Joy of Living, the 12th volume of the Rougon-Macquart cycle.
