description

Giovanni Maurigi (1823-1881) was a very well known Sicilian jurist. Student of philosopher Emerico Amari, his maestro's intellectual stimulus led him to contribute to the 1848 risings in Palermo. He was a well known laywer during the Borbonic regime, who defended patriots persecuted by the government. After Italian unification he became a judge. A liberal, his own professional career can be interpreted as an example of Sicilian elite recruiting in the new unified state.
