description

The competency-based curriculum is being more and more used in France, and leads to pedagogical changes. This raises questions about what to teach, and how to teach. More specifically, the characteristics of thegeneration Y, including the fact that this generation considers education as a consumption value, being engaged only if they get some direct personal benefits, leads to invest some methods of innovative pedagogy, in order to get students’ interest and engagement. At the same time, literature about soft skills, show the importance of those skills for success, encouraging to more include soft skills in education. The research presented in this thesis, aims to assess how a games-based approach could encourage the development of soft skills among students in higher education. This research investigated more specifically occupational therapy students, in their English courses. In order to answer this research problem, a mainly qualitative investigation has been conducted during two years, among about a hundred of third year occupational therapy students. This was completed by smaller investigations, among occupational therapy students who did not use games in their studies, among medical students who shared one of those English lessons with the occupational therapy students, and among professional occupational therapy English teachers. The outcomes seem to show that the games-based approach - taking into account the whole educational environment – would encourage the development of some soft skills, because it allows students’ engagement in their studies.
