description

The article describes the issue with which the new diocese of Gliwice is contending. Since the very beginning of administration of the diocesan curia an archive has been functioning, which collects, stores and, if possible, makes gathered sources available. The division of archival documents keeps the office division worked out by Mr Józef Bonczol, the first worker of the Archive. Documents produced by departments and offices of curia are still the matter of competence of these departments, passing with time to the Archive as historic documentation. Since 2007 archive records gathered in parish archives have been taken care of the Archive. There is a growing interest in collections of parish registers. Microfilms of parish registers are made available to interested parties by the Archive of the Diocesan Curia in Gliwice, while the parish registers themselves are still kept in the parishes. The diocese resigned from keeping duplicates of parish registers. The greatest challenge for the new diocese is creation of office space for the future diocesan archive, gathering parish archive records in the central archive, which could efficiently protect them and make them available to interested parties. Next challenges for the new archive are digitization of the archive records and creation of new jobs connected with this. Actually, current actions of the Diocesan Curia in Gliwice are performed by one person, who can devote only one day per week to archival work.
