description

In the 16th and 17th century, changes that took place in Polish culture contributed to the consolidation of the image of the Polish nobleman. It was influenced by numerous factors resulting both from the cultural and artistic aspirations of free citizens of the Commonwealth, as well as from the specificity of the Polish state, which from 1569, after the union with Lithuania, spread over vast territories, being constantly plagued by wars. Active participation in the culture of the European Renaissance distinguished Poland from other Slavic nations and had its literary dimension by taking over the ideas typical for this cultural movement, popular among the nobility dealing mainly with agriculture. However, the negative attitude towards the city, praise for simple life, the search for peace and joy in living on one’s own property, was brutally confronted with the reality of wars, especially on the eastern and south-eastern borders of the country. It was there that tensions took place with the Grand Duchy of Moscow or Turkey, not only being a brutal armed clash, but also a confrontation of cultures and values . The article addresses these issues by pointing selected examples of literary works characterizing the transformations that influenced the sensitivity between otium rurale and negotium militare.
