International audience; Not long ago, the streets of Asian cities (South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia) were mostly used by pedestrians and cyclists. But in recent years, they have experienced in recent years a huge growth in the number of vehicles plying their streets: nowadays it has even become hazardous to try to cross these streets, and in some cases pedestrian sidewalks have been invaded by parked vehicles (cars and motorbikes), in addition to commercial activities. The walking experience is unpleasant and unhealthy. What have been the adaptations to the conflict between motorized mobility and non-motorized ways to get around the city ? After reviewing some of the difficulties encountered by pedestrians, we will examine in particular the development of pedestrian-friendly districts, pedestrian overpasses and off-street pedestrian paths. Examples will be drawn from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. This paper is part of an ongoing research project on sustainable transport in the Philippines.
