Photographic exhibitions are organized today outside to attract those who do not attend museums and galleries. I studied the "non-public" (Ancel & Pessin, 2004) : the absents, those to whom they are intended, but that do not attend. What are the factors hindering the encounter with the works despite their urban exposure mode ? The article seeks to explore representations of culture that are forged by the respondents (migrants from popular classes) during outings organized by a social center. Using a case study (a visit to the Musée du Quai Branly), it shows how certain non-public meetings with high culture, far from abolishing the symbolic distance, on the contrary contribute to anchor or to dig it.
