Almost 70 fortified prehistoric sites have been listed in and around the western part of the Jura. Most were founded during the Middle Neolithic at the end of the 5th millennium BC and two thirds have traces of later occupation dating to the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. They are usually interpreted as defensive sites, but other hypotheses concerning social or symbolic issues have also been advanced. With the lack of detailed research, interpretation is mainly based on topographical location, on morphology as well as on distribution models. Using the examples of recent excavations at Bourguignon-lès-Morey (Haute-Saône), at the Camp du Château in Salins-les-Bains (Jura) and at Bramont in Belfort (Territoire de Belfort) we will look at other readings and interpretations of these sites.
