Teacher education has long been at the heart of pedagogical research. However, especially if we consider the recent Italian pedagogical research, we observe that most of the attention has been devoted to disciplinary and didactic skills, which are a necessary but not sufficient condition for the acquisition of an adequate professional profile. Especially for secondary school this gap is evident: while the training paths of educators, primary school and kindergarten teachers include a specific and broad pedagogical attention to the care of relationships and therefore to emotional competence, this is not the case in the current training paths of secondary school teachers nor in specialization courses for future support teachers. The educational emergencies of our time, however, make it crucial and urgent that pedagogical research takes charge of training courses for teachers thanks to which the care of relations with individual students and with the class group, but also with families, does not happen in an extemporaneous, occasional or causal way, but is implemented consciously, on the basis of a pedagogical reflection of meaning and method: considering first of all the constitutive features of the educational relationship and then translating this reflection into practice, that is, choosing certain lines of intervention and specific educational tools adapted to the different contexts, stages of life and educational needs. The essays collected in this volume aim to initiate a similar reflection.
