Życie i przygody małpki [The Life Story of a Little Monkey] by Ferdynand Antoni Ossendowski, by means of its very title itself indicates the scope of interest of the novel, i.e. the earthly existence, the beginning and the end, of which the heroine, who is also the narrator, gradually becomes aware. The diary provides a framework for the life story of Ket, a little chimpanzee, and the observations made in the text. The main text consists of three chapters corresponding to subsequent stages of life of the heroine: ‘Family and Home’, ‘The Little Monkey in Captivity’, and ‘The Return of the Little Monkey’. Their retrospective nature is evident in the first-person narrative, the use of past tenses, the self-presentation of the heroine-narrator, and the revealed purpose of the story. Thanks to this creation, the reader can look at the world through the eyes of the monkey who, by learning a new slice of reality, organizes her knowledge and turns it into noble deeds. Life in the jungle and among people has revealed the duality of the world. It has prompted reflection and words of wisdom. What matters most are feelings and what we give to others – kindness, love and friendship. This makes the story of chimpanzee Ket a moving tale about people, their nature, inclinations, goals and dreams.
