The history of Dijon's alderman’s prison is closely linked to that of the establishment of the municipal building in the 14th century, although the developments that characterize it are more properly linked to judicial issues. Thanks to the sources of practice, this paper demonstrates that it is at once the object of rivalry and cooperation between the lay powers and the city hall, which rigorously watches over the defense of its jurisdictional rights. The figure of the jailer, in charge of guarding the prison and the detainees, is also analyzed in order to understand the management system imposed by the town hall and its evolution, as well as the constraints that weigh on this officer and the deviances that are linked to it. Finally, the image of the prison in society, its integration and its interactions with the rest of the urban fabric and the inhabitants are examined in order to underline the persistence of the links between prisoners and the outside world despite their confinement.
