description

The writings dedicated to law and politics do not constitute a mere appendix to Kant’s critical project, but an essential aspect of it, since they contribute to delineating the strictly human horizon of reason and its claims and expectations. Moreover, the entire cosmopolitical peace project, in view of which Kant reads the history of the human species, must be included under the philosophical sign of a goal, a destination, which is assigned to man by the possibility of using reason. Each individual’s belonging to the human species cannot be defined solely in relation to a predetermined physiological outfit, but requires to be mediated by the ability to share with other men the tasks that are imposed on each by simple reason, so that mere reason can become shared and common reason, and therefore capable of creating customs and institutions.
