description

The research aim of the article is to determine the legal rules related to marriage in the earliest writings of the primary Christianity, that is dated to the post-apostolic period and to the activities of the apologists of the IIth century. The research query indicated that the writers of the post-apostolic period put more emphasis on maintaining by the spouses harmonious relationships between each other, preserving evangelical recommendations and gaining moral virtues. In turn, the writings of later generations, especially apologists, contain observations of a legal nature and lay down rules that have the character of permanent tendencies, which became the basis for legal regulations at later synods and councils. Primary Christian communities did not have to worry too much about establishing such norms, because emperor Octavian August issued the relevant laws governing the institution of marriage that were eagerly used by these communities. For this reason, in the writings of the Christian writers, no detailed rules governing the course of the wedding ceremony or the text of the marriage vow were included.
