description

The introduction searches for a guiding principle that can combine personal and institutional care for people with dementia. It approves the point made by Brandenburg & Güther that parts of subjective, objective and hedonistic theories of „good care“ need to be combined in order to identify what makes sense within these approaches. Following Gastmans, human dignity is regarded as the guiding principle for dealing with people with dementia. To do so, it is necessary to (1) see people with dementia as partner in a dialogue; (2) to respect persons for the relationships in which they are embedded; (3) to acknowledge the identity of the person with dementia acquired through his/her history. The reflctions in this book aim at an acceptance of the phase of dementia as part of the ageing process. They describe it as a true challenge, but also as a challenge that can be met and experienced as making sense.
