The thesis o f this article is a claim th at on abstract pain tin g is a literary work of a p a rticu la r kind. In this theory, on co n stru ctio n of a literary work an d on co n stru ctio n of a representational painting, Ingarden points to th e ir layered composition, simultaneously denying this ąu ality to abstract paintings. Indeed, an abstract p a in tin g lacks layers which are characteristic of representational p aintings, but it has a sound - meaning bilayer typical o f a literary work yet expressed by different means. The lack o f time dimension and literary theme, however, causes th at such a work of a rt is similar to ancient philosophical and religious treaties.
