language educationcommunicative competencesoft skillsdescription
Attempts to adjust education closely to the needs ot the job market and expectations of employers constitute a distinctive trend in modem education policies. The article discusses this issue in relation to the Polish language as a school subject, for the teaching of which an employer's perspective is seemingly irrelevant. The author, however, argues against this point of view, showing how the linguistic and communicative competencies developed in the Polish language classroom constitute an indispensable element of soft skills. The article also quotes results of pilot studies conducted among middle school (gimnazjum) pupils to examine their level of mastery of two key skills sought after by employers: discussion and team work. The results obtained in these studies show that schools are not sufficiently effective in developing these skills. This situation, according to the author, stems from several important factors.
