The aim of this article is to present chosen features of high school graduates’ oral expression. While describing the analysed texts, the author uses the term of substitution, which means a correct, proper to the human behaviour, operation of changing the things which exceed one person’s capabilities into the things which the person is able to do. An analysis of oral expression showed that the process of substitution takes place on several text levels. The content substitution occurs on the cognitive level: scientific knowledge is substituted with common knowledge. The composition substitution takes place on the structural level: a complex composition is replaced with an easy one. The style substitution occurs on the stylistic level: an appropriate style is replaced with a colloąuial style. According to the author, the major cause of such a situation is the crisis in the didactics of the mother tongue as the most modern achievements in the field of linguistics are not used in the didactics. What is more, the didactics is helpless in the face of educational practice and cannot show ways to improve this situation, e.g. take part in the creation of the language education curriculum in an effective way or provide new educational models.
