subject

description

Dicranum viride (Sull. & Lesq.) Lindb. is a rare, strictly protected, threatened species in Poland (Stebel 2012). For several years its number of stations has clearly increased, especially in the eastern part of the country (eg. Stebel et al. 2015; Vončina 2016; Żarnowiec & Stebel 2016; Rosadziński 2017). It is not known whether the increase in the number of records is actually related to an increase of its stations or rather to increased attention to this species in the area since being designated as endangered and protected in Poland in 2001. The paper presents 25 new stations of Dicranum viride from the Białowieża Primeval Forest (including Białowieża National Park and the Białowieża and Hajnówka Forest Inspectorates) and some regions in the Carpathians (Gorce, Beskid Sądecki, Pogórze Przemyskie, Góry Sanocko-Turczańskie, Bieszczady Zachodnie), found in 2015–2017. The newly discovered stations increase our knowledge of the habitat and phytocoenotic preferences of Dicranum viride. In the Białowieża Primeval Forest it is a quite common species, growing mainly on bark of Carpinus betulus in oak-linden-hornbeam forest or in transitional patches between oak-lindenhornbeam and riparian forests. Its populations are small and usually occupy only a few square centimetres at particular stations. In the Carpathians it grows primarily on bark of Fagus sylvatica (rarely on shaded sandstone) in beech forest. The populations are bigger there and usually occupy several square decimetres. Dicranum viride commonly grows in forest patches with no visible evidence of forest management or else places these signs are small, usually from many years ago, now visible as rotten stumps of felled trees.
