In the Polish lexicography, there have appeared newer types of dictionaries, including the ones derived from or modelled on earlier lexicographic works. Their evaluation reąuires that objective criteria for a comparative description of dictionaries be developed. In this paper, the author argues that a dictionary constitutes a specific narration (meta-expression) about language reality, and that is why it should be possible to explore any dictionary using a framework modelling all and any expressions produced by language users. Referred to as a “pragmatic frame”, such framework encompasses nine components: who - when - where - about what - in what way - for what purpose one addresses whom - for what reason - with what effect. The application of the pragmatic frame for describing any two dictionaries reąuires that answers to the same nine ąuestions be provided, which ensures an optimum degree of comparability of the description.
