Within the framework of local development in Inner Areas in Italy, the paper focuses on the potential of historical centers as territorial capital of exceptional value that, among other resources of these territories, are largely unused, suffering an identity crisis and powerless assist processes of depopulation and economic and social decline. In these contexts, heritage can take a decisive role in self-sustainable local development, able to enhance underutilized components for new inhabitants and new lifestyles, without neglecting a factor of great importance, that is the quality of life that these places offer, far above the average of urban areas. The contribution proposes an initial screening on the 21 municipalities included in the Nebrodi Sicilian Inner Area, outlining the software (social and human capital) and hardware (material capital) components of the territory.
