The article presents the issues of Polishness and Silesianness in the national consciousness of Jan Goczoł, who is known as a poet with a great deal of authorship, prose writer, columnist, and also an Opolian Silesia cultural activ-ist. The article describes the life path of the poet, his family background, and the crystallisation of national consciousness in his writing. The poetry of the de-fender of the native tradition is emotionally marked with Silesian motifs and refers to the culture of many generations of Silesians.
