description

The textual formulas inscribed in the basilical decors of San Clemente and Santa Maria in Trastevere at Rome, encourage to think about the presence, the power and the significance of the voice in ecclesial spaces. Unrolled on phylacteries or inscribed in gold letters on apsidal conch, the words from sacred texts, but also the legends and the dedications aim to establish the auctoritas of the visual discourse. Perpetuated voices of the prophets, apostles, of Christ and the Church take part in the monumentality of the decor. These inscribed voices animate and update the decor at the rythme of liturgies. We propose to consider these inscriptions as crystallization of historic contexts. The Church stands out as a necessary intermediary between human and divine, as a priviliged way to reach Christ.
