The research of the religious motivation of fast in the light of the theory and practice, within the framework of three great monotheistic religions, came to the following conclusions: fasting, as a religiously motivated act, expresses its deep conviction about depending on the man and his fate from God; may be motivated by the need to show contrition before God for the committed sins; expresses hu mility in the face of the threatening danger; as a way of preparation, purifiation before major holidays; as one of the elements in commemoration of important events; as the source of peace and balance in the individual and social life; is a tool to help tame the passions; prepares for a new phase in life; in conjunction with the alms is an expression of responsibility for poor people; can shape the fortitude and wakefulness; helps to create space for silence, reflction and prayer.
