Some silver coins and a caduceus of the V century B.C. (today exposed in the British Museum, London) certifying the existence of the ancient settlement of Longane, which was connected by Diodorus Siculus and Polybius, at the river Longanos of the plane of Milazzo, the site of the battle between the Syracusans of Gerone II and the Mamertines of Kio (269 B.C.).The research carried out have led to the discovery of a vast area indigenous partially hellenised, having the core placed in the shelter of the ancient river Longano and a territorial distribution (formed by villages, fortified areas and necropoli) which occupied part of the current territories of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Castroreale, Rodi Milici and Terme Vigliatore (Messina, Sicily), area a time bordering on Mylai, Tyndaris and Abakainon, neighboring centers of Magna Graecia.
