media criticismjournalism educationdescription
The article attempts to identify the place and significance of media criticism in the context of journalism education in Ukrainę. There is no ąuestion that criticism of the media has been around for nearly as long as the media themselves. As regards present-day curriculum courses in media criticism, they would be non-existent now without respective research, the results of which were first presented in scholarly and later on in educational materials. The author thus gives a brief overview of the theoretical background of the discipline in ąuestion before going on to discuss the place of media criticism in university curricula. He specifically touches on two books that contain number 100 in their title: Killing the Messenger: 100 Years o f Media Criticism (1991) and Our Unfree Press: 100 Years ofRadical Media Criticism (2004). As is evident from these titles, we are dealing with a field that has a fairly rich and long history. The author points out that media criticism has been making steady progress in Ukrainę as a university discipline sińce 2005, having been first launched in Lviv, then in Kyiv, which soon after led to the introduction of the respective courses into the curricula of over twenty Ukrainian universities. The growing scope of the discipline in ąuestion puts the onus on the academic community to develop a proper Ukrainian-language textbook in media criticism.
