description

The introduction of sexual pedagogy in kindergarten and in schools usually brings about tensions and conflicts which are often caused by the fact that parents are not involved. Important for reconciling the conflicting views is knowledge about the values that sexual pedagogy fosters and the aims it pursues. This contribution shows that aims and fundamental principles of sexual pedagogy are compatible with the major part of approaches to sexual pedagogy from a theological view. After that, the relationship between sexual pedagogy and sexual ethics is analyzed. The authors argue for the thesis that it is problematic so see sexual ethics only as a tiny part of sexual pedagogy and explain that this is due to the underlying understanding of sexual ethics as a purely normative discipline. This view of sexual ethics should be broadened because sexual pedagogy includes many aspects that are relevant for fostering moral competence and therefore include also aspects of an ethics of empowerment that reflects the “can” and not the “ought”. In addition, an ethics of relationship is an important complement to sexual pedagogy. On the other hand, theological ethics also needs to develop further. A development in sexual ethics can be observed from an ethics of sin to an ethics of responsibility and to an ethics of relationship. The focus laid on the comprehensiveness of sexual education leads in addition to the claim not to regard sexual ethics anymore as a specialized field of ethics independent from others, but to integrate it in an ethics of human self-expression and action.
