Master's thesis in Specialized nursing (ME519) Background In recent years there is an increased practice in keeping mechanical ventilated patients more awake and mobilized. This has proven to provide a better outcome. Little research has been done on how mechanical ventilated patients themselves experience this practice. Purpose The purpose of the study was to gain a broader insight into the perceptions and experiences of mechanical ventilated patients related to being awake and mobilized while in respiratory care. Research question: How do mechanical ventilated patients experience being mobilized? Method We used a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews. Six former patients were interviewed about their experiences. We used Graneheim & Lundman’s content analysis on collected data. Findings The results are grouped into two main categories with subcategories. The relationship-and the communication with the nurses is important for the mechanical ventilated patient to feel secure and to have a positive experience with the mobilization. Communicating in respiratory care is challenging, and the nurse must facilitate this. The mechanical ventilated patients experience physical and mental limitations that affect mobilization. They report issues of pain, muscle weakness and delirium. Several patients experience amnesia from the intensive care stay. Conclusions The study points out how challenging it is for mechanical ventilated patients to be mobilized, due to pain, muscle weakness and mental limitations. Collaboration with a competent nurse who manages to convey security and facilitate communication is of crucial importance for the implementation, and for the mechanical ventilated patients’ experience of mobilization.
