Social Work in the Area o Social Support for the Family with a Disabled Child

In the times of continually changing socioeconamic conditions behind the functioning o f contemporary families, many of them have to cope with a variety of problems of everyday life. Families raising disabled children come to face a particularly hard situation in this respect, since problems pertaining to the emotional sphere, ones related to providing care and education, securing material and daily life needs, as well as those of the social nature, which appear within the families, are additionally augmented by the fact of their child’s disability. Solving the problems is often impossible relying on the limited resources of the family members themselves. And the support extended to them by other relatives, friends to the family, or acąuaintances does not always allow them to overcome the hardship. Consequently, it is necessary to extend professional support to families who bring up a child with a disability, which must be provided by the state and the whole society. As a result, problems faced by these families are becoming one of the basic areas of social work in the contemporary social reality. The author of this paper discusses a few problems touching families with a disabled child and points to ways of overcoming them, which are currently realized by social work within the framework of the support system for these families in the conditions of the Polish reality.
