description

Comparison of autobiographical motifs in the works of Anaïs Nin and Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. The purpose of this article is to present two women writers, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette and Anaïs Nin, and to analyze the role of autobiography in their writing practice. In order to achieve this objective, we will analyze certain motifs, essential to the life and writingof these women writers, such as the importance of the characters of Colette’s mother and Anaïs Nin’s father, and their unusual nature. This will allow us to highlight, among other things, the theme of women’s sexual freedom, which has broken taboos and generated controversy, making the two women writers predecessors of feminist literature. Following Anna Ledwina’s approach, conveyed through her article "Les Je différents de Colette: étapes de la quête de soi", Synergies Polognen°4 /2007, we will seek to demonstrate that autobiographical writing constitutes the essential element in Colette’s work and life. In Anaïs Nin’s work, we will explore the notion of autofiction, sometimes called the illegitimate daughter of autobiography, which allows the artist to analyze her own experiences, hiding them through the appearances created by novels or stories told. Our reflections on the autobiographical writing of the two artists mentioned above are based both on research by literary theorists involved in autobiography(Phillippe Lejeune, Małgorzata Czermińska, Michał Głowiński) and women’s criticism (Anna Turczyn, Brigitte Gautier). The conclusion of this study will prove that these transgressive authors still have much to offer readers, especially those interested in the issues of the fusion of work and life.
